ABC/XYZ analysis combines two different questions: how economically important is this SKU? and how predictable is its demand?
ABC: economic importance
ABC segmentation commonly ranks items by an economic measure such as annual consumption value, revenue or gross-margin contribution. A items receive the most attention; C items the least.
XYZ: demand behavior
XYZ segmentation groups items by demand stability or predictability. X items are comparatively stable; Z items are intermittent, lumpy or difficult to forecast.
Why the matrix matters
An AX item may justify a very different replenishment policy from a CZ item. The matrix is useful because it prevents a company from treating every SKU with the same forecasting method, service target and reorder rule.
Segmentation is not the final answer
ABC/XYZ is a starting framework, not an optimization model. The most useful implementation connects segmentation to actual decisions: forecast method, review frequency, service level, buyer attention and exception thresholds.
